Working Group on SDGs for Children in Myanmar

Working Group on SDGs for Children in Myanmar was jointly held by Central Statistical Organization, Department of Social Welfare and UNICEF at meeting room of Central Statistical Organization, Office 32, Nay Pyi Taw on 16th June, 2017 with the aim of discussing initial ideas for priority SDG indicators for children in Myanmar, and a process/timeline for articulating an action plan.

The meeting was led by Dr. Wah Wah Maung, Director-General of CSO, Ministry of Planning and Finance. The participants from head and members of Social Cluster Group for National Strategy for Development of Statistics and experts of social policy and child rights of and senior staff at UNICEF’s Myanmar attended to the meeting. Firstly, Dr. Wah Wah Maung, Director-General of Central Statistical Organization delivered opening remarks. In her remarks, she really appreciate for progressing well with SDGs agenda and building on these working group is formed timely and importantly as a good platform for SDGs.


She presented on the current progress of developing SDGs, capacity building and statistical cooperation with other departments to raise the awareness of SDGs goals and SDGs Baseline Report.  Then Dr. San San Aye, Acting Director-General of Social Welfare focus on the implementation of child related SDGs through the strengthening of statistical platform by a well-functioning M&E system to evaluation the progress.


And then Mr. Samman Thapa, of UNICEF make opening key note speech on behalf of UNICEF and presented on UNICEF mandate and proposed support role in Myanmar: identify priority child related SDG indicators for Myanmar, provide technical/capacity support to ensure adaptation of these indicators to Myanmar’s context and offer recommendations on how to strengthen the monitoring, evaluation and use of this data, particularly through the use of national systems. Consequently, the participants from Social Cluster attended to the meeting actively discussed on the issues. The meeting was successfully completed at 13:00pm.
